For what it's worth I recently had a problem with Windows XP crashing quite
reliably when using Wireshark & TShark (although I never did verify if the
problem did or did not happen with windump).
In my case I found that uninstalling the Microsoft Loopback Driver (which I had
installed for testing Wireshark) made the problem go away. I got the feeling
that there was some interaction between my firewall (Kerio) and the loopback
driver. Since I don't know from Windows device drivers and my firewall is old &
etc, I didn't pursue the matter.
Just for curiosity's sake: what network devices/drivers & Firewalls are
installed on your PC??
