the rpm version of Suse 7.0 is too old. Unfortunately the version
numbers for the rpm formats do not follow the major rpm-package
numbers (at least in Suse): rpm-3.0.4 is rpm package format 3,
rpm-3.0.6 is format 4. Oh, yes, I should definitely mention that
I'm no expert on rpm formats and may be wrong with the stuff above.

So what can you do? You can try to install a newer version of rpm
(but I doubt that this is an easy task) or run a tools like rpm2cpio
and then just install the resulting cpio archive without the benefits
of an rpm. I also wonder whether the resulting binaries will work
on your system (libpcap, gtk/glic, libc). The most reliable approach
might be to find someone who still has a 7.0 suse system and is wil-
ling to build an rpm for you or to build ethereal yourself.

I found out that "pro" means "instead of" (as in proconsul). Now I know
what proactive means.
