I was just searching the Ethereal archive b/c I was having a problem
identical to yours and just figured it out: You either have Packet Socket
(from the Linux Kernel) compiled as a module, or not compiled at all.
Try adding:
alias net-pf-17 af_packet
to your /etc/conf.modules . If that doesn't do the trick, recompile your
kernel (there are plenty of documents on the net that'll guide you though it
if you're not familiar with the procedure) and be sure to say Y or M to the
Packet Socket option.
