Dear all,

I would also agree on turning them off by default. A lot of my colleges
use ethereal in a 'test lab' setup where no DNS is available. They all
complain about the slowness of ethereal. They do not expect and use
the lookup feature. It is no problem to switch it off, after someone
tells them what the problem is, but they do not guess it by themselves.

Best regards
Michael

For what it's worth, I have had a half dozen Engineers who have each on separate occasions came to me and to tell me that Ethereal sucks because
it hangs when they stop the capture. They don't know why, and when I
tell them, they usually fix the problem and move on.

Nonetheless, the cause of the hanging isn't apparent to most people (the
first time I had the problem, I didn't figure it out until I looked at
the source code).

Those who want the functionality can turn it on easily. Those who are
clueless (end users) won't get the impression that Ethereal is a crappy
product because their DNS resolution isn't setup properly.

I tend to agree. People who see that addresses are not being translated
easily know where to look to fix the problem, because the problem is
obvious.

When Ethereal hangs because your environment does not work, possibly
because of no fault of your own, often do not know where to begin looking.
