Okay, a patch against current CVS is at 
http://malte.homeip.net/ethereal-kde.diff, it adds a configure option 
--enable-kethereal which defaults to yes (ignored unless the kde subdir 
exists), and will run configure in that subdir if enabled. If that 
sub-configure fails, it is not a fatal error, it will just disable kethereal.
