...and therefore always sets a filter on the socket, even if the filter
is the result of compiling an empty filter string (which generates a
filter that captures all packets).

I tried it yesterday, and saw the same symptoms on a Red Hat system not,
as far as I know, running 7.0.

I tried it today, and *didn't* see the same symptoms.

(I also tried it at home, on Debian 2.2, and didn't see the same
symptoms; I don't remember whether I installed libpcap 0.6.1 on that
machine, however.)

I think I tried both experiments on the same system (as this is Linux, I
don't know the way of asking that particular dialect what version of the
*complete OS*, rather than what version of the *kernel*, it's running).
