I'm embarrassed to ask such a basic question, but when installing for the

Are you saying the *installer* said your machine was running XP Pro, or
that *Wireshark itself* said it was running XP Pro? You said "should I
continue the install?", so I'm guessing you meant the *installer* said
your machine was running XP Pro.
When I ran the installer for the 32-bit version of Wireshark 1.2.9 on my
32-bit XP Pro (virtual) machine just now, the Wireshark installer didn't
say anything about the version of the OS; however, it ran the WinPcap
installer, which did.
You're installing the 64-bit version of Wireshark, right? I don't know
whether the 32-bit installer always attempts to install a 32-bit version
of WinPcap; if it does, you can't use the 32-bit version of Wireshark on
64-bit Windows, as WinPcap includes kernel-mode (driver) code, and you
can't run 32-bit kernel code on a 64-bit OS (or vice versa).
@Guy: there is no 32 vs 64 bit version of the WinPcap installer. The
installer for WinPcap will install only 32bit components on a 32-bit
Windows, and 32bit + 64bit components on 64bit windows. One installer does
everything.
@Paul: if you are referring to the WinPcap installer stating that your
system is "Windows XP - AMD64", please ignore it. WinPcap has no easy way to
distinguish between XP64 and 2003-x64.
The newest release of WinPcap (4.1.2) will not show that system information
panel any more.
Have a nice day
