OK .. started from scratch ... D/L the wireshark-leopard
from here:

when I run X11 2.1.1, which does, and I start usr/local/bin/wireshark

I get a window, blank(white) with header of
Wireshark network analyzer

and in Terminal, I see many lines similar to this:

13:20:17          Warn /Users/rd/.wireshark/preferences line 2449: No such 
preference "user_dlt_d.trailer_proto" (applying your preferences once should 
remove this warning)
