The answer is yes. I live in italy, but I use linux in english. I switch to en or it for the specific purpose of the moment. With auto-detect I could't do that. For my daily use I switch to EN. To develop/test wireshark italian translation I switch to IT. 

I don't know if this scenario applies to others, but for me getting rid of a functionality that is still in place is not a good approach.
