On Windows I do the following so I don't have to touch config.nmak

1. Set some environment variables

   set MSVC_VARIANT=MSVC2008
   set VERSION_EXTRA=-DEV
   ...

2. Do
   nmake /E ...


   /E means env var defs should override any matching defs in makefile
