Wireshark-dev: Re: [Wireshark-dev] slow sip voip flow for large captures

Hi,
Please put the patches in bugzilla, if possible split them in two parts one that's ok for all types(Step 2,3,4?) of calls and one which
Implements the stuff for SIP but not for the other call types. I think the SIP dissector keeps a table over the calls as well could that table be shared?
Regards
Anders

Subject: [Wireshark-dev] slow sip voip flow for large captures

hi!

wireshark can draw call flows for sip voip calls (accessible through the menu Telephony/VoIP Calls).

however, when the capture is large, containing tens of thousands of sip voip calls, wireshark becomes very slow at producing the list of calls and the call flows.

here are my experiences with a capture file of 500 MB containing approx. 40K calls on a debian machine having:

4xAMD Phenom(tm) II X4 940 Processor
4GB RAM

with the svn stock it takes about 10 hours to do it; the report of the profiling done with oprofile looks like this:

by changing SIPcalls_packet() to use a hash table for the lookup of the calls (on sip call-id) the runtime decreases to an (estimated) 3-4 hours.
SIPcalls_packet()'s cpu usage has decreased from 10.61% to 0.0115% (1000 times faster)

step 2
------

the next improvment was to change append_to_frame_graph() to use a hash table for graph analysis (still slow, over 1 hour):

CPU: AMD64 family10, speed 3e+06 MHz (estimated) Counted CPU_CLK_UNHALTED events (Cycles outside of halt state) with a unit mask of 0x00 (No unit mask) count 750000 samples  %        image name               symbol name

20        0.0017  lt-wireshark             append_to_frame_graph.isra.8

however, append_to_frame_graph() got from 69.45% to 0.0017% (40852 times better)

step 3
------

I have changed the graph analysis list and the callsinfo list to use prepend instead of append:

CPU: AMD64 family10, speed 3e+06 MHz (estimated) Counted CPU_CLK_UNHALTED events (Cycles outside of halt state) with a unit mask of 0x00 (No unit mask) count 750000 samples  %        image name               symbol name

step 4
------

reordering is performed _continously_ while adding elements to the voip calls list.
(by _gtk_rbtree_reorder which is calling qsort from libc which is calling msort_with_tmp)

after disabling continous reordering, by using in voip_calls_dlg_update():

       /* disable the re-ordering */
       gtk_tree_sortable_set_sort_column_id(sortable,
GTK_TREE_SORTABLE_UNSORTED_SORT_COLUMN_ID, GTK_SORT_ASCENDING);

       listx = g_list_first(listx);
       while (listx) {
           add_to_list_store((voip_calls_info_t*)(listx->data));
           listx = g_list_next(listx);
       }

       /* enable the re-ordering */
       gtk_tree_sortable_set_sort_column_id(sortable,
CALL_COL_START_TIME, GTK_SORT_ASCENDING);

the runtime decreased now to approx. 1 minute (pretty reasonable when compared to 10 hours)

I can publish the patches on bugzilla; however, the changes/tests have been explicitly targeted at sip voip calls.
some of the data structures are global and used by _all_ voip protocol taps; it won't work correctly with dumps having also non-sip voip calls.

pls. let me know your opinion.

thanks.
