Thanks for the reply ... I tried installing "snmp-mibs-downloader" and it fails (same/similar error a with the smi libs...).  I tried to resolve it with " sudo dpkg --configure -a" as I found via a google, it also failed with a similar error.

As you suggest, my ubuntu must be broken.  I send an email on the ubuntu users group to see if I can get this resolved first ...

Your system is broken, you should fix it first. Please ask for help on ubuntu 
users list.

You don't need to do this. The official packages should work.

You need to install snmp-mibs-downloader as descibed in
/usr/share/doc/wireshark-common/README.Debian .
