If the OS X user launching wireshark does not have admin privileges (allow user
to administer computer un-checked in users/groups preferences), then Wireshark
will hang forever at startup showing "Loading module preferences".

Log message displayed (e.g. if running from command prompt) is

    /Applications/Wireshark.app/Contents/MacOS/Wireshark
14:33:32 Capture Warn sync_pipe_wait_for_child: waitpid returned EINTR.
retrying.'

This appears to be because the user does not have sufficient privileges to
launch dumpcap correctly.

What am I trying to do?

1. Launch wireshark as an unprivileged user
2. open a saved capture file for analysis

Workaround:

    chmod o-rx /Applications/Wireshark.app/Contents/MacOS//dumpcap

This will allow wireshark to launch, and display the error message "Couldn't
run ...dumpcap in child process: Permission denied"

(The other obvious workaround is to give the user admin privileges, but in my
case I don't want to do that)
