Running on Mac OS X 10.10.5, build 14F1909 (Darwin 14.5.0), with locale en_CA.UTF-8, with libpcap version 1.5.3 - Apple version 47, with libz 1.2.5, with GnuTLS 2.12.19, with Gcrypt 1.5.0. Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3615QM CPU @ 2.30GHz (with SSE4.2) Built using llvm-gcc 4.2.1 (Based on Apple Inc. build 5658) (LLVM build 2336.9.00). -- If the OS X user launching wireshark does not have admin privileges (allow user to administer computer un-checked in users/groups preferences), then Wireshark will hang forever at startup showing "Loading module preferences". Log message displayed (e.g. if running from command prompt) is /Applications/Wireshark.app/Contents/MacOS/Wireshark 14:33:32 Capture Warn sync_pipe_wait_for_child: waitpid returned EINTR. retrying.' This appears to be because the user does not have sufficient privileges to launch dumpcap correctly. What am I trying to do? 1. Launch wireshark as an unprivileged user 2. open a saved capture file for analysis Workaround: chmod o-rx /Applications/Wireshark.app/Contents/MacOS//dumpcap This will allow wireshark to launch, and display the error message "Couldn't run ...dumpcap in child process: Permission denied" (The other obvious workaround is to give the user admin privileges, but in my case I don't want to do that)
