It neither crashes for me with tcpdump nor with Wireshark on my 10.11 VM.

The default buffer size Wireshark picks is 2 MB; have you set the buffer sizes
higher?  (There's no point in setting the system default buffer size higher
unless you also have Wireshark ask for a bigger buffer size.)
