There are no APIs in Wiretap to allow the GUI (or the command line) to disable
a particular file type.

There are no APIs to allow that, either.

At least some of the other software on the OS you run (or, at least, it 12.04
version) has a format selection dropdown, but it doesn't control how to
interpret a given file, it controls what file types to display.  We *do* offer
such a dropdown on some platforms, but it doesn't solve your problem.
