Some other Wireshark bugs about the "Microsoft" issue:

    bug 6051, where:

Dell E6510 laptop with Win 7 64-bit.
Wireless NIC disabled via switch on side.
Installed Wireshark 1.6.0 64-bit.

Edit -> Preferences -> Capture -> Interfaces -> Edit

\Device\NPF_{748EDE56-BE94-4875-B454-D00D51CA626A} has "Description" as
"Microsoft"

In the registry I have:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\NetworkCards\17]
"ServiceName"="{748EDE56-BE94-4875-B454-D00D51CA626A}"
"Description"="Intel(R) Centrino(R) Advanced-N 6200 AGN"

which is the only place I see a description stored. Hm, found a bunch more
under ControlSets, but none are "Microsoft".

The wired NIC's description was found okay.

    and which points to the WinPcap bug report:

        http://www.winpcap.org/pipermail/winpcap-users/2010-June/003865.html

    where it's another Wi-Fi adapter (Atheros, in that case), and to the other
WinPcap bug report

        http://www.winpcap.org/pipermail/winpcap-bugs/2011-April/001387.html

    which then points to

        http://www.winpcap.org/pipermail/winpcap-bugs/2010-November/001304.html

    which says

It's a known issue with the networking stack on Vista/Win7.

Native wifi adapters on Vista/Win7 have an Intermediate driver (from MS)
between their miniport driver and winpcap itself, and such IM driver traps the
request that WinPcap uses to get the name, returning just "Microsoft".

    bug 6088, on W7, where both a Wi-Fi and a Bluetooth adapter are just
"Microsoft".

I'll try plugging my Belkin stick into my W7 machine and see what happens
there.
