In the previous versions, it was it was possible in the file save dialog to
save just the displayed packets. This has now disappeared in Wireshark 1.8.1. 

The file save dialog presented is similar to the standard file save in Windows. 

I tested by installing the 1.6.7 version in a different directory, and this
shows the correct file - save dialog with "save displayed packets"... and the
rest.


Since I now have both versions running on the same system, I don't think this
is specific to my installation. 

If you need further information, I would be happy to assist. I think this may
be related to libwsutil.dll, but I am not sure.
