The C and Lua functions do help, but it is still less than what I suggested in
the feature request. One still need to:
- Create the preference
- Call function to parse preference value
- Loop old ports and unregister those
- Loop new ports and register those

I hope it was clear that I suggested that all this would be done by a single
API call. (But I don't know if that is too much asked.)
