I've eliminated the assertion errors (in my local version) but I really need an
answer to Bill's question because I don't know if I should apply the same sorts
of changes to the "Old Packet List" code and, if not, whether I should use the
pre-patch shortcut bindings for that code. 

Would this be a good time to take the plunge and remove the old packet_list
code or do concerns remain about the new stuff?
