It works for me, so it's probably dependent on some characteristic of your
setup.
I think a SnowLeopard upgrade will get rid of any Xquartz version you've
installed, so it's probably not a result of not running the SnowLeopard version
of X11 (my machine is running that).
I get the same diagnostic messages in Console ("All Messages", although they
should show up in "Console Messages" as well; anything run from the GUI gets
its standard output and error redirected by launchd to a pipe to launchd, and
launchd logs all that output through Apple System Log, so it shows up in the
ASL store and thus Console):
