Yes, this sounds like something very useful and intuitive. There should be a
little marker in the status line showing that you are in "marking mode" while
the marking keys are pressed. I would prefer a combined special key though,
shift seems to be to general... How'bout "Shift+Ctrl+Alt"?

Why not use the same special key combination as above and use that with UP,
DOWN, PGUP, PGDN keys to mark packets.
