Isn't strange that libpcap does it with tcpdump and fails with ethereal?
It's not strange if tcpdump and Ethereal are linked with different versions of libpcap, which could be the case if one or the other are statically linked with libpcap. 

What do

	tcpdump -h

	ethereal -v

report?
