I would like to know if it is possible to run Ethereal without installing it on a windows system. An exemple : I would like to have it on a usb key and run Ethereal directly from this key without installing it. Is it possible ?

It might be. We haven't ever tried it.

The USB key would have to contain a Windows-compatible file system (such as VFAT or NTFS), so that it looks like another disk drive on the system. You would have to plug the USB key in and install Ethereal on the system, telling the installer to put it on that other drive. I don't know whether the installer lets you say "install Ethereal here"; I suspect it does, but I don't know. This would, of course, require that the USB key have enough space to install Ethereal; I don't know whether it would.

If you're going to capture network traffic, you'd have to install WinPcap as well - and, as it includes a driver, I suspect you *can't* install it on anything other than the system disk. You would have to ask the WinPcap developers whether that's possible. If it's not, you would *NOT* be able to walk up to a Windows machine with a USB port, plug your key into it, and start capturing traffic.
