"something unknown here" means that ethereal encountered a construct in the bitstream it did not recognize. Due to the way PER works this cause ethereal to stop decoding anything further in the bitstream of the PDU. This could be due to many different reasons: 1, bug in the ethereal dissector (not unlikely since it was handwritten) 2, due to ethereal only supporting partial v9 dissection of the protocol and not v10 3, something else If you can provide an example capture with the problem and also (if you have access to) the decode output in text format from a different tool that does decode the packet correctly, then I would be happy to look into it and fix the problem in ethereal. I will not have time to look at it for another week and a half though since i am travelling and have no access to my development platform. ----- Original Message ----- From: Keith A French Date: Sat, 14 Aug 2004 15:27:29 +0100 Subject: [Ethereal-users] H225 Decode Problem To: Ethereal-Users <ethereal-users@xxxxxxxxxxxx> With Ethereal V0.10.6 and other recent versions, when I load an H225 & RTP trace, parts of the decode to not seem to be understood. For instance whenever an H.225 Call Setup packet occurs, the summary window shows:- "H.225.0 CS: setup OpenLogicalChannel [UNKNOWN PER: Unrecognized H.450.x operation][Unreassembled Packet]" In the Protocol Tree window the unreassembled packet is to do with H.4501:- " h4501SupplementaryService Item 0 H.450.1 SupplementaryService NetworkFacilityExtension EntityType EntityType: endpoint (0) EntityType EntityType: anyEntity (1) InterpretationApdu InterpretationApdu: discardAnyUnrecognizedInvokePdu (0) ServiceApdus ServiceApdus: rosApdus (0) rosApdus Item 0 ROS ROS: invoke (1) Invoke invokeId: 1 Opcode opcode: global (1) global: 1.2.826.0.1.1907195.1 something unknown here [Unrecognized H.450.x operation] [Unreassembled Packet: H4501]" The same problem exists with all other H.225 packets (e.g. Call proceeding, Alerting, Connect & Release Complete etc).
