What OS are you running? I’m on XP-Pro and Ethereal 0.10.5 and haven’t
had any problems since making those changes.
Guy also mention in a previous post about having a previous version and
the effects it would have.

I have the same problem. The fix listed in the archive is to go
edit->preferences-> and check ”save window position”, click
apply and ok. It seemed to work for others, however, every time I restart
Ethereal, it gives me the error. When I go back to see if the box is still
checked, it isn’t, it keeps defaulting back to unchecked. I am going to
try 10.4
