Barry,

you have not enough privileges to access the bpf devices.

Solution 1:
Execute in the Terminal
sudo chmod u+r /dev/bpf?
You have to type in your password. This has to be repeated after each reboot.

Solution 2:
Start ethereal in the Terminal using
sudo ethereal

There are more but this should help.

Best regards
Michael

I downloaded ethereal via fink (all needed packages like xfree86 etc.),
installed the packages,
started XDarwin, launched ethereal all without any problems.

My problem is that there are NO interfaces in the interfaces dropdown in the
capture options
dialog (Capture->Start). This means that ethereal is not detecting either
the Ethernet or the
airport interfaces on my Power Book?

I've been looking through the docs on the ethereal site but no joy. Can
anybody fill me in
on how to get ethereal to find the Ethernet and airport interfaces ?

Thanks,

Barry
