No, I really do mean a 2.4.6 kernel.

2.4.16 is certainly a "later kernel" than 2.4.6, so it should work, but
the stuff in the Aironet driver to support ARPHRD_IEEE80211 first showed
up in 2.4.6, so I say "2.4.6 or later".

The FAQ doesn't say what's *recommended*, it just lists what you *need*.
I've seen nothing to show that you *need* a 2.4.16 kernel.

Is that specifically due to issues in earlier versions of the Aironet
driver, or is it due to issues that affect packet capture in general?

If it's due to packet capture issues in general, that would be a
*separate* recommendation; it shouldn't be buried in an item about
802.11 capture.
