Have you tried just downloading the binaries from

	http://hpux.cs.utah.edu/hppd/hpux/Gtk/Applications/ethereal-0.8.20/

for example?  They've managed to figure out how to build it - they even
have a source package, which I presume is what they used (although they
use the HP C compiler, rather than GCC, as you appear to be doing).
