Ethereal Wins $2M Melbourne Cup

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) -- Ethereal, ridden by Scott Seamer, overtook Give
the Slip to win the $2 million Melbourne Cup at Flemington Racecourse on
Tuesday.

Sheila Laxon became the first woman trainer to saddle a winner in the
Melbourne Cup.

Ethereal came from well off the pace and won out wide from Give the Slip,
which led most of the 2-mile race -- Australia's richest.

Persian Punch finished third in the Melbourne Cup for the second time,
matching the performance of three years ago.
