a kind individual from this list has answered some of
my questions but suggested I bring this one back to
the list.
I had no problem installing Ethereal. Installed all
the RPM files from the Ethereal FTP server on my
Redhat 7 linux box, started it, and then started
running some tests on my network.
I can see lots of ARP, BROWSER, and DNS packets being
captured off the line, but I do not see any packets
being capture related to http/smtp/pop unless I am
making the http/smtp/pop requests directly on the
linux box. If I jump on my NT4 workstation (which I'm
on now) and try to browse to any website I do not see
those packets being captured by the Linux box with
Ethereal running. That was the reason I had posted my
Etheral tutorial request.
When I started the packet sniffing I had selected to
capture in promiscuous mode and didn't receive an
error, although I'm not sure I would or not if my NIC
will not support promiscuous mode.
