The additional information I was able to obtain:
pcmcia card:
xircom
cbe2-100btx

internal card choices:

inspiron has actiontech brand
    based on Intel chipset 8355x
    winmodem


latitude has 3com brand
    3cn3ac1556
    hw modem

This card is OEM to dell only

So I have to choose between different product lines to get the 3com or
"actiontech" internal card, neither of which will probably work under Linux.
The inspiron actual has the better graphics display.  So if only one NIC is
going to work, the one in the PCMCIA slot, is the cbe2-100btx worth my time
or does someone have a good suggestion for a PCMCIA card?
