Your suggestion led me to find the problem.
On Win95 the Network installation program only handles 8.3 file names. One
has to use the "Browse" function to select the file name. To make sure I
also put the files in a simpler directory name.
I now have Ethereal working and have been able to analyse the packets
flowing back and forth. One of the things I have found already is that some
of our systems had IPX turned on and was adding to network traffic, and yet
we have nothing that uses IPX, so I have been able to locate those machines
and remove IPX. Ethereal has already been of use. Now to find our jabbering
problem.
