Sorry, I missed the W98 in the subject line (you might want to repeat
that information in the message, in the future).

Given that, I suspect the problem may be (as per mail from others who
have reported this; perhaps it's time to make this an entry in the
Ethereal FAQ) that you have two of the same type of networking card in
your machine.

Apparently (as I understand what Fulvio Risso, one of the developers of
the code Ethereal uses for packet capture on Windows 9x and NT), Windows
9x doesn't give cards names that include an ordinal number, so if you
have two cards of the same type in a machine, they have the same name.

Unfortunately, this means you can't distinguish between them - and it
also, apparently, means you can capture only on one of them.
