Ethereal-users: RE: [ethereal-users] Anyone see the Sniffer ad in Network Magazin e?
We have multiple copies of Sniffer running here, but then we spend US Tax
payers money so of course "money is no object". I am keeping my co-workers
apprised of the status of ethereal, right now the number of protocol
dissectors is much greater in Sniffer but no where as much as a year ago.
Ethereal is growing at an amazing rate.
I use ethereal pretty much exclusively for the info I require, but some of
the other projects we support, Sniffer is the tool of choice. One of the
things that people like about Sniffer is it's expert mode plus they like
having remote sniffers. I've shown then how we can get an old PC, install
your open source OS of choice on it ( mine is OpenBSD ). Run ssh to the box
and send X across the ssh pipe.
In fact running SSL enabled Apache with the Mindterm ssh and vnc Java
clients I don't even need an ssh client on a box. I've even run ethereal
across the 'net tunneled thru ssh. You don't want to enable live update of
the packet info, but other than that it's very usable.
thanks for all the work, y'all

I don't think Craig was implying it was aimed at us, and that we need to
respond; as he said, he was joking.
I'm curious how often we actually compete with them, in the sense that,
for example, somebody decides not to buy a Sniffer because they can put
Linux/BSD plus Ethereal on a laptop for less money.
(Of course, given that I think they charge rather a lot of money for the
Sniffer software, people who don't need all the stuff a Sniffer does may
well decide to do that - or run Windows on the laptop but run one of the
Sniffer software's Windows competitors.)
