Your DISPLAY environment variable is not set (otherwise it
would have been printed after "display:").

I bet you became root and for some reason your environment
variable "DISPLAY" was not carried across. How did you become root,
via "su - root", or "su root", or am I wrong? "su - root", on my
system at least, gets rid of the DISPLAY variable, while "su root"
does not. Anyway, I use "sudo" to start ethereal.
