I read ethereal-users and not ethereal-dev, so haven't seen some of the
discussions.

That sounds fine to me.  Stopping the capture is a user action (or, if
triggered by filling buffers or something, is at least a one-time
action), so a column width optimization at that point should be useful
and not cause viewing problems.  Similarly, picking the column sizing
after reading a file, to fit the characteristics of the file, sounds
useful.
