i am new to ethereal development but have been using ethereal as
a tool for quite some time. it is a really good tool and i find
it extremely useful in multiple cases. especially in troubleshooting
really crazy network problems.

i just bumped into this discussion in the mailing list:
http://www.ethereal.com/lists/ethereal-dev/200206/msg00008.html

basically, i would like to develop a separate application that can
link to the ethereal library to use the protocol dissectors to
manipulate the packets. i was thinking of allowing the proto stuff
to be separated into a different libraries (like the one originally
proposed in this old email).

what is the current status of this? are there any documentation i can
look at to study this? i am now swimming through the source code and
can see that the EPAN portion can be separated into this proto
library. is there any documentation on how to write a standalone
application that uses these protocols parsers?

thanks and keep up the good work!
