Ulf, you are probably right.
Essentially, the 64-bit porting adds a new, separate driver to the WinPcap set. This correctly means that the impact on previously supported OSes is minimal, but a driver in an early development stage, even being very careful during the development and testing phases, is quite a big risk for the stability of a machine.

This alpha is out so we can collect feedback and, if needed, fix things. But I would probably wait for a beta before including it in an Ethereal release.

Well, I might respond anyway :-)

Would it make sense to update the Ethereal installer to this version? That way
you'd get a bigger crowd of alphatesters, and if I understood your mail
correctly, 32-bit users shouldn't be affected.
That sounds like a very early release.

I personally don't like to have early alpha release into the "production" installer of Ethereal (there are always problems that you don't even think about).

We do (and unfortunately already) have to many bugs IMHO. We should avoid adding new bugs by using unstable libs (like we don't use GTK2.8 for the Win32 release for now).

However, what we *should* do is to let our users know that this lib is available (e.g. mention it in the wiki and at questions at the mailing lists), so our users can check it out if they need to.

Regards, ULFL
