That depends largely on the computer you are using (processor, speed, NIC
capabilities). More than likely, you WILL drop some packets.

If you're asking why are you losing MORE packets when Ethereal is running,
it's because you're adding work to your system. When Ethereal is running,
the system not only has to try to receive all the packets, but it also needs
to make copies of the packets and send them to another application (Ethereal),
adding to the system load and reducing the amount of resources the system
might otherwise use for just packet reception alone.
