I like the feature that building a debian package of an ethereal
release can be done by simply switching to svn/releases and make
debian-package. If the debian directory was not in the releases, how
would I know which debian directory I should use? Are there any
disadvantages of carrying around the debian directory? It's just a few
kilobytes large.

Another solution that might work is removing trunk/debian and adding
some SVN or script magic to automatically get the proper debian
directory from wherever the official debian directory is located.
SVN seems to explicitly support this (I have never tested it):
