I'd like to confirm what Christian Hirsch posted in

Ethereal produces and X error when starting from a remote ssh connection.

The program 'ethereal' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)'.
  (Details: serial 117 error_code 3 request_code 38 minor_code 0)

It may be related to the splash-screen since it produces that error even when 
run with --help. 

I found that a workaround is to enable trusted X11 forwarding by adding -Y to 
the ssh command line.
