Hi!

I got the same problem and managed to isolate a sigle packet (see the attached capture file) that causes crashing. I can open the file in tethereal:

1 matevzp@meter:~/work/trace/fe-2004-12-23$ tethereal -r crash-20041223142917.cap
  1   0.000000 82.252.186.18 -> 193.2.76.75  Gnutella Gnutella, 1060 bytes
but any filtering results in a crash:

matevzp@meter:~/work/trace/fe-2004-12-23$ sudo tethereal -r crash-20041223142917.cap tcp

** ERROR **: file proto.c: line 2072 (alloc_field_info): assertion failed: (*length >= 0)
aborting...
Aborted

Kind regrads, Matevz

I got the problem that ethereal crashes while opening a file. Could somebody tell me why this happens. I have tried to gather as much information as possible, but I think I did not get much value information. In the past I usually got a back trace which help. However this time the ethereal behavior is different.

Using the file in tethereal give the following output.

tethereal -r moritz.eth -R "(gtp)" -w test.eth
965444
** ERROR **: file proto.c: line 2072 (alloc_field_info): assertion failed: (*length >= 0)
aborting...
Abgebrochen
