I'd like to know this as well. When I run:

libtool --mode=execute ddd ethereal

gdb does not know where to find the source or symbols, yet it I do 
"run", it runs it.

I tried to build a static version, but that is broken on Solaris. The 
flags passed to the linker are wrong, and I was not able to work out
why.
