One more data point below. The bug exists even with newer GTK, etc.
Shouldn't we suspect the Ethereal GUI code rather than the GTK/etc
libraries?
$ ./ethereal -v
ethereal 0.10.6
Compiled with GTK+ 2.0.9, with GLib 2.0.7, with libpcap 0.8.3, with libz
1.1.3,
without libpcre, without UCD-SNMP or Net-SNMP, without ADNS.
NOTE: this build does not support the "matches" operator for Ethereal filter
syntax.

This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)'.

that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

Interestingly, the output file gets written completely before the crash.
OTOH, Ethereal 0.10.6 running *locally* on my SuSE 9.0 box does *not*
exhibit
this annoying bug. Version numbers:
