That wouls be a project where the TAP system would fit perfectly.

See README.tapping and the example tap in tap-rpcstat.c

It is just waining for someone to implement it.
Give it a try.

It would be nice if Ethereal could gather and show an "ARP table"
based on the ARP-packets seen in the capture, and normal IP packets
too.

As a bonus, Ethereal could highlight anomalies such as multiple MAC
addresses claiming to be the same IP address, etc. Perhaps one view
could be a table sorted on IP address, with plus-sign expansion when
there are multiple MAC addresses associated with the IP address.
