...and presumably libtool builds for "shl_load()" rather than "dlopen()", so plugins are built as ".sl"?
Sigh. At one point we were using libtool's libltdl stuff, which presumably wouldn't have this problem, rather than GLib's gmodule stuff, to dynamically load code, but I forget why we abandoned that - I think there were some problems with it.
