I'd propose to use "File -> Export" as menu item, and then let the user pick
an option from a list (radio button): selected frames, selected frame,
selected data in frame (or something like that). You could even add an
option having either the value "export to bytes in network-order" (default),
"export as hex" or "export as (what we call the byte view)".

Perhaps, although should "File->Export" be used for exporting *different* sorts of things? Exporting frames^H^H^H^H^H^Hpackets in their entirety is one thing - and, just as we have several options for "File->Print" and "File->Save As" to control which packets to print/save, we could have those options to control which packets to export - but saving part of the packet data seems to be a different sort of operation to me.

Do you see XML output as a Save option or as an Export option?

I see it as a "(Save|Export) Dissection" option, just as I see what's currently implemented as "print (as text) to a file)" as a "(Save|Export} Dissection" option. I see "save" as saving raw packet data, rather than saving a dissection of that data.
