ADLER is only used to get it into a dissector table as I understand it.
I think that Tomas wrote some more details some months ago when he asked Andreas Sikkema to put in support for a "nsp.object" dissector table in the H.323 plugin.
I guess that you can find that message by searching on "h323 plugin adler" on the Ethereal site.

I think that it would be good to have a possibility to use text strings in dissector tables.
