I'm not aware of anyone working on a straight z/OS port. Glancing
through
the IBM site it appears that z/OS provides a pretty complete POSIX
layer,
so it should theoretically be possible. At a minimum you would need to
port libpcap (the capture library) as well, or modify Ethereal to use
any
native capture APIs that z/OS might provide. You might try sending a
message to ethereal-dev@xxxxxxxxxxxx to see if anyone is working on a
port
or is interested in helping.
Have you considered doing passive captures? Most Catalysts let you
mirror
(SPAN) switch ports. You could set up a dedicated PC on a SPAN port to
do
your captures. This would require minimal participation by your LAN
support group, and it wouldn't affect the performance of the mainframe.
The CIPs are another story, however. I'm not aware of any way to mirror
them.
BTW, I'm not sure if it would help in your case, but Ashley Chaloner has
created Ethereal packages for Linux on the S/390 here:
