OK. Before I spend more time on that path I'd like some comments
on an alternative approach: Provide aclocal.m4 via cvs and inhibit its
automatic regeneration. Provide a separate script to generate aclocal.m4
instead. That script can very easily do the right thing.
Idea: The need to actually recreate aclocal.m4 arises rather seldomly,
actually only when acinclude.m4 changes or a new .m4 file is added
or an existing .m4 file is updated.  Open question: Will a current gtk.m4
from a linux system work on a windows system?

I found out that "pro" means "instead of" (as in proconsul). Now I know
what proactive means.
